Sonoma Mission Wedding | New York and California Destination Wedding Photographer

I feel so honored that Mikey and Iona asked me to travel across the country, from New York to my home state of California to photograph this backyard beauty.  Their wedding day was perfection in every way, and couldn’t have been any more Californian.   It began at the historic Sonoma Mission where Mikey and Iona said their vows inside the painted adobe chapel.   Their reception took place in Iona parents’ backyard where twinkle lights were strung between the two large willows that anchored the yard around the pool, sprinkled with floating candles.

It doesn’t often rain in California in the summer, so tents are rarely rented for an outdoor wedding and this wedding was no exception.  But Murphy’s law almost had it’s say that day, because as I drove up to Sonoma from San Fransisco that morning, it was pouring rain.  I prayed for a miracle.  The rain persisted as I arrived at her parents house to check out the space in advance.  It continued as I drove over to the Mission to see the ceremony space, and it was still deluging when I stopped for a bite to eat before heading over to her hotel.   It was starting to subside as I walked up to Iona’s hotel room porch, but as I raised my camera to take my first photos of her getting her make up on, the sun actually peeked out from behind a cloud and stayed out until sunset, which provided Mikey and Iona with a clear sky for the full moon rising over their first dance.

If I had to describe Mikey and Iona’s love in one word it would be “inviting.”  I can’t explain it any other way.  They seem so at rest in themselves and at rest in each other’s presence that whether they are together alone or  together with others they are at peace.   Another person introduced into their company is neither a burden or a threat to that peace,  but is simply invited into it.     It’s one thing for a couple to be like that in general, but to be like that on a day as hectic as your wedding day, it was clear that their inner peace runs deep.

I love how their laid-back, free-spirited personalities were reflected in little ways throughout their wedding.  Their choices of burlap runners, wildflowers,  and nude mix-matched bridesmaid dresses only scratch the surface.  My favorite uniquely Iona and Mikey touch was their first dance to Bob Marley’s “One Love” under the willow tree full of twinkle lights.  They and their friends  and family kept the dance floor filled to overflowing throughout the night as the moon rose higher and higher shining its blessing on the happy couple and their future lives together.

Thank you to Iona and Mikey for trusting me to capture such an epic day of their lives and for putting me so at ease and thank you to Cherie for being such an invaluable assistant throughout the day.
